FABREGAS TAKES DIG

Cesc Fabregas has taken a dig at both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich by saying that both teams do not impress him with their achievements so far this campaign. Real Madrid recently managed a 6-1 win over Schalke in the Champions League last 16 stage.

It was a comfortable night for the club, who are one of the favourites to win the competition. However, Cesc Fabregas has said that it is simply not in the quality of the Champions League to witness such results. He said that Schalke simply fell away without any fight.

The German outfit had a great opportunity to come back into the match at 1-1, but they did not show enough spirit to do so according to Fabregas. He also reckons that the commanding 20 point advantage of Bayern Munich over the second placed in the Bundesliga also does not make them the favourites to win the Champions League. Barcelona have been the most successful team in this competition over the last five years. They have won it in 2009 and 2011, but Bayern Munich are considered as this year’s favourites.

They are close to qualifying for the quarter-finals after securing a 2-0 lead against Arsenal in the first leg. Fabregas, though, thinks that his former club can still qualify for the quarter-finals.

"The Champions League does not usually see this kind of results (Madrid's comprehensive win) but I was not impressed. Schalke surrendered with the scoreline at 2-0, right after they could have made it 1-1. Neither does Bayern winning the German league and cup 90% of the time mean anything to me. They have a momentary 2-0 lead against an English team. We shall see in the end," said the 26-year-old. He has already contributed more than 40 goals for Barcelona – through goals and assists – this season.
